Summary
This book is a photo illustrated account of the rescue of a large ruined 18 century farmhouse in southern Burgundy. It is very much a ‘do-it-yourself’ account with all the major repairs carried out by us and our friends.
The first task was to get the roof covered in to prevent the building from collapsing completely. This was done by a ‘Task Force’ of five friends during two weeks in February 1997. The job was to repair some of the stonework, replace some roof timbers and then cover the roof with felt and laths. Fortunately it was successful and lead on to the proper repair and civilisation of the house. The book is essentially a description of our activities particularly describing the amusing incidents involving our friends and the local people.
The book naturally divides into two parts. The first is a description of our crises, adventures, incidents and comedies when the house was being rescued from complete collapse.
The second part is the ‘civilisation’ of the house. We cleared rubble, laid floors and fitted ceilings. The highlights of this are the creation of two wonderful living rooms and the building of a unique bathroom which seems to give everyone who uses it great deal of pleasure. Visitors are put to work shamelessly and their experiences are an integral part of the book. It is ‘a must read’ for anyone who has dreams of a dramatic renovation in rural France.
